JOM Grant

Johnson-O'Malley Act (JOM)

Passed in 1934, the Johnson-O'Malley Act is designed to provide supplementary financial assistance to meet the unique needs of Indian children. Like Title IX, funds are determined through student head count, which is conducted in October. Examples of what JOM funds can be used for are: teacher aide, tutors, Home School Coordinator, Career Development, and Cultural Activities. One unique aspect of JOM is the required parent committee (Indian Education Committee), which approves all programs and budgets funded by Johnson-O'Malley. This committe has traditionally used these grant monies to support native language summer school activities.
